Provide load calculations and historical peak demand from utility company to justify derate. String wire size _must_ consider derate (.82) and conduit fill derate. (Wire size x derate x conduit fill derate = ampacity.) Total amps divided by the number of strings must be less than the maximum conductor rating. ( Example: On a 3 string system, generally upsize to #8 wire from junction box to inverter. 40A x temp derate of 0.80 x conduit fill 0.58 = 18.56A max conductor rating. 18.56A is less than 19.79A [47.5As / 3 strings * 1.25] total amps per string. ) A surge protector device is required when upgrading the service.
