This AHJ follows County of Los Angeles (ESS Requirements) (CA).
Please follow this link to County of Los Angeles (ESS Requirements) (CA)
1/5/24 ESS disconnect required within 6ft of MSP on same wall and not blocked by walls/gates/etc
Add DC disconnects to disconnect schedule (County of LA ESS DB says any AC disconnect that shuts down the battery needs to be on the schedule - for this AHJ include DC as well)
5./14/24 In addition to an exterior non-fused ESS disco for the fire department, provide a 2nd fused disconnect or circuit breaker at the ESS when the ESS conductors pass through a wall, ceiling, or floor. Where circuits from the input or output terminals of energy storage components in an ESS pass through a wall, floor, or ceiling, overcurrent protection shall be provided at the energy storage component end of the circuit. Section 706.31(F)
- Separate ESS Disconnect Required
- Gateway Disconnect,ESS Disconnect
- ESS Elevation Detail Required
- Yes - with dimensions
Plan set
- Plan Set Requirements
- ESS JOBS REQUIRE FIRE APPROVAL. REQUIREMENTS UPLOADED AS PDFs.
- A CHECKLIST IS ALSO REQUIRED.
- For ballast mount projects use PZSE (contact ) for structural engineering For MPUs, refer to the LA County MPU documents below
- If the address is above 2,000', the structural calc packet MUST read 20psf. the plans do not have to specify the snow load.
- Do not have to attach @ 48 O.C if the Engineer is good with 72 O.C
- Bus Certs are NOT accepted in this AHJ

- Roof Plan
The two fire pathways must be on two separate planes
Provide the distance for all fire setbacks from array to ridge/hip/valley For systems with multiple strings/inverters, the plans shall clearly identify how all modules are mapped to each string and/or inverter input
- Attachment Detail
Specify number of comp shingle layers on PV 1 The attachment detail must show roof type, slope, and number of layers if comp Distance from top of module to roof is to be called out for ballast mount projects use PZSE (contact ) for structural engineering.

FOR ALL PROJECTS
- Do not use 90°C ampacities/derate factors. FOR
MPU PROJECTS
- (2 ground rods at least 6' apart is 1 supplemental electrode) If ground rods, comply with the following: 250.53(A)(2) & (3)
- Resistance of Electrodes: For the ground rod specified on the single line diagram, indicate that there shall be two ground rods separated by six or more feet Identify if the main panel is fed via an overhead drop or underground feed.
- If overhead, provide the size of the service entrance conductors AND ground size (GEC)
- Identify GEC size to Table 250.66
- If solar ready MPU:
- Show model number for solar ready service panels
- Show the location of new and existing service panels on the site plan to comply with Section 210.12(D).
- AFCI protection is required for circuits relocated more than 6 ft. per Sect. 210.12(D).
FOR HOT BUS PROJECTS
- If MSP is a hot bus and has 6 or less breakers, provide a panel schedule identifying all the breakers
FOR GMA PROJECTS
- The wire from the inverter to the AC disconnect must also be sized to #6 Per SCE requirements, specify the distance from the GMA to the fused disconnect as 2-3' maximum Indicate that equipment grounding electrode conductor (EGC) shall be in separate conduit.
- The EGC is not installed in the liquid-tight flexible conduit from the AC disconnect to the GMA GMA requires GEC to be ran in its own conduit to MSP
EXISTING SYSTEMS
- Identify the conductor and conduit sizes/details used to connect to the existing system

- Ground Mount Fencing Required
- Mesh/Scrim
- Ground Mount Notes
- Section 690.31(A) in the Code requires that the conductors be “guarded”. A perimeter fence would certainly meet this requirement. A type of mesh/backing installed to protect the conductors and connectors might also be sufficient to meet this requirement. Just note on the plan that it will be installed on site.
- No SnapnRack. IR only
- Show ground rod at the array on the ELD
- UL2703 listed racking systems recognized by L.A. County for integrated grounding and bonding can be found at . The installation instructions for these systems can be downloaded from this page.
- Provide a detail for grounding and bonding. The detail should identify the interconnections of module - module, module - rail, rail - rail; the specific manufacturer and model of the grounding lug (UL2703 listed); dc-dc converters or microinverters (if applicable); the conductor size; and any other information that may be needed. See attached LA County Grounding & Bonding packet for reference. (If optimizers are being used provide a detail showing how to bond them using a listed UL 2703 lay in lug) A detail on how to bond the pipes is also required.
- When possible, key the system as one array. Only break into multiple arrays when absolutely necessary.
