Net Excess Generation Notes

Energy Charges (or Credits) shall be based on the net kilowatt hours purchased from or delivered to the Company for the bill month. For any bill month during which the Energy Charges are a net credit, the respective Energy Charges for the month shall be zero. Any Energy Credits shall carry forward on following month’s bill. If the customer is on a time of use rate, the energy credits shall carry forward by first applying excess On-Peak kWh against On-Peak kWh charges and excess Off-peak kWh against Off-peak kWh charges, then applying any remaining On-Peak kWh against any remaining Off-Peak kWh charges. Effective with the seasonal rate change on June 1 of each year, any accrued credit will be reset to zero. Credits shall not offset the Basic Facilities Charge or the Demand Charge.

Site Plan Reqs

Do NOT indicate the state after the utility's name anywhere in the plans. It must read as "Duke Energy" not "Duke Energy (NC)"

SLD Reqs
  • Panel wattage needs to be listed on the single line with the panel manufacturer: ex. Longi Solar: LR5-60HPB-315, 315W
  • Inverter wattage needs to be listed on the single line with the inverter manufacturer: ex SolarEdge 3800H-US, 3800W
  • Model numbers
  • Nameplate sizes of equipment, including number and nameplate electrical size information for solar panels, inverters, wind turbines, disconnect switches, etc.
  • The metering arrangement required whether installed on the customer side of the existing meter (“net metering/billing”) or directly connected to the grid through a new delivery point requiring a separate meter
  • Equipment specification product literature (for the solar panels and inverters) that provides technical information and certification for the equipment to be installed with the application

Battery

  • separate ac disconnect needs to be utilized to disconnect solar. Breaker in gateway will not suffice
  • battery requires separate disconnecting means (knife blade disconnect)

Existing Systems

  • Duke requires both existing and new system sizes to be combined in total system size.
Install Reqs

Requirements for Disconnect Switch A clear, visible open point of disconnection A clear, visible indication of switch position Padlock provisions for locking the switch in the open position Installed on the interconnection customer's side of the electrical interconnection with the utility's system, accessible to utility personnel Located in close proximity to the utility's electrical delivery point Labeled "Generator Disconnect Switch" The switch may isolate the interconnection customer and its associated load from the utility's system or disconnect only the generator from the utility's system and shall be accessible to the utility at all times.

Compiled from public records, 2026. Tariffs and interconnection rules change; verify with Duke Energy (NC) before you rely on this. The useful move: if an installer says you need a main panel upgrade, ask how these tap and interconnection policies were considered first.
