Plans & docs

Site Plan Reqs
  • Customer last name matches utility bill
  • Address matches utility bill
  • Installer name & contact information
  • Building(s) and streets shall be labelled
  • Compass direction (indicate North)
  •  A minimum of one cross street should be included on the site plan. If the nearest cross street cannot be shown, include the name, distance, and direction to the nearest cross street.
  • Indicate the distance between equipment
  • If the service is overhead, include the clearances to overhead service lines
  • If the service is underground, add note: "No overhead service lines exist"
  • AC/DC size must be listed on both Site Plan and ELD
  • Indicate the distance between equipment
  • If MSP is combo type, separate Utility Meter from MSP in drawing.
  • Site Plan must include a legend reflecting equipment abbreviations and locations. (also use leaders)
  • AC disconnect required within 10 ft of Utility Meter -- Exceptions: If AC disconnect cannot be placed within 10ft of utility meter due to site conditions, a placard will be required at the utility meter, depicting the location of the AC disconnect, this will need to be indicated on plans. NOTE: If we use a placard route, remove all notes that reference being within 10' of the meter Site Plan and ELD.
  • Note which Disconnect is the Utility AC Disconnect
  • Inverter locations must be shown on site plan. If microinverters are module integrated, it should be noted as such
  • Utility Meter need to be labeled on the site plan, even if meter is part of MSP.
  • Indicate the phase and voltage at the utility meter. (Site plan and ELD)
  • Site Plan UM shall be on building's exterior.
  • Section 230.67 of the new 2020 NEC requires the installation of Type 1 or Type 2 surge-protective devices (SPD) for new and replaced electrical equipment. See "Surge Protection and NEC 2020" in Files section of this page. If the project includes MPU, minimum Type 2 SPD must be installed.
SLD Reqs

Inverter

  • Indicate the phase and expected individual kW AC nameplate of each inverter(s).

Disconnect

  • Please ensure the utility AC disconnect is described as 'visible-open type, lockable, and readily accessible' or very similar.
  • Label AC Disco like this: LOCKABLE KNIFE BLADE UTILITY AC DISCONNECT SWITCH WITH VISIBLE OPEN.
  • Note which Disconnect is the Utility AC Disconnect

Utility Meter/Service

  • Indicate the phase and voltage at the Main Service Panel
  • Indicate the phase and voltage at the utility meter. (Site plan and ELD)
  • Utility Meter must be rated for 200A.
  • For single phase installations, the meter should be specified as 1-phase, 3-wire.
  • No upgrades to meter/main combo allowed. Must be kept separate.
  • Check with Utility to determine if meter on existing system is old or new NEM type.

Other Requirements

  • Customer last name matches utility bill
  • Address matches utility bill
  • AC nameplate rating (kW) system size (can be in kw or watts)
  • The aggregate kW AC nameplate rating of each DER system
  • Clearly identify the Reference Point of Applicability (RPA) and denote the RPA where test and verification features will be applied in the written test procedure. (The RPA location should point to the inverter)
  • Include Number of phases of the DER system.
  • If the project includes MPU, minimum Type 2 surge-protector (SPD) must be installed.
  • Show system size on SLD.
  • Wire may be sized to inverter requirements.
  • Required: Yellow with black lettering “PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM CONNECTED” placard required at UM.
  • Required: Yellow with black lettering “PV AC DISCONNECT” placard at AC disconnect.
Install Reqs

The public utility may require that the applicant furnish and install an interconnection disconnect switch that opens, with a visual break, all ungrounded poles of the interconnection circuit. The interconnection disconnect switch shall be rated for the voltage and fault current requirements of the DG facility, and shall meet all applicable UL, ANSI, and IEEE standards. The switch enclosure shall be properly grounded. The interconnection disconnect switch shall be accessible at all times, located for ease of access to public utility personnel, and shall be capable of being locked in the open position. The applicant shall follow the public utility's recommended switching, clearance, tagging, and locking procedures.

Placards

The applicant shall label the interconnection disconnect switch, “Interconnection Disconnect Switch”, by means of a permanently attached sign with clearly visible and permanent letters. The applicant shall provide and post its procedure for disconnecting the DG facility next to the switch.

Compiled from public records, 2026. Tariffs and interconnection rules change; verify with Xcel Energy (WI) before you rely on this. The useful move: if an installer says you need a main panel upgrade, ask how these tap and interconnection policies were considered first.
